The unit of currency in South Africa is the Rand (R), which is divided into 100 cents. Notes are in R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10. Coins are in denominations of R5, R2, R1 and 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c.
For the up to date exchange rate please use our CURRENCY CONVERTER above. The exchange rate tends to be in the international tourists' favor. The continuing devaluing of the Rand means that you should find most local goods very affordable, but imported and specialty manufactured items tend to be expensive. Generally, you will find fine cuisine, wine and entertainment cost a fraction of what is charged by equivalent establishments elsewhere in the world. A general idea of what things cost in South Africa are: a beer costs about R6, a can of Coca Cola R2.50, a bottle of water about R3-4, gasoline sells at about R3.50 per liter, a roll of 36 exposure print film will cost about R35-40.
Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club are accepted by most restaurants, hotels and stores. Proof of identity may be requested in some instances. It is therefore useful to carry a passport or some form of photo ID at all times.
Most banks in South Africa are open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-3:30pm and Saturday, 8:30am-11:00am. All main shopping centers have automated teller machines. Most ATM machines will support your card if it bears the Cirrus Logo. Travelers Checks and all major currencies are easily exchanged at banks and exchange companies at a commission of about 1-2%.
