Schotia Game Reserve is the oldest private game reserve in the malaria free Eastern Cape Province. This game reserve contains over 40 mammal species where you will see Giraffe, Rhino, Hippos, Crocodile and all of the antelope that South Africa is famous for. But the main attraction at Schotia is their lions. It is said that they are the best pride of free ranging lions in all of the Cape area.
The tour that I personally recommend is their “Tooth & Claw” game drive. This tour starts around 2 PM and begins with a welcome soft drink in their staging area where you will meet your guide/ranger. You will then board an open Land Rover for your game drive where you will view more animals in one area than you thought was possible. During this afternoon drive you will take a break at what is considered the largest “Lappa” or dining area for some soft drink refreshments. After that your game drive will concentrate on finding their lion pride. Then you will return to the Lappa for a traditional open fire cooked dinner. Schotia’s Lappa has reed and sneeze wood walls and is open to the skies except for the outer edge where the dining tables are arranged. This outer ring is covered in thatch. Inside the Lappa there are several huge Schotia trees and a log fire. Dinner is usually a mix of safari cuisine and traditional South African cooking. After dinner you will depart for a night game drive to view all of the nocturnal animals, birds & cats and to locate the lion pride if you didn’t find them on the afternoon game drive. This tour is an excellent value for the money and you will enjoy photographic opportunities that may not be available anywhere else in the Province.
